Fujifilm X-H2 mirrorless camera announced: 8K video support

Fujifilm today announced the X-H2 mirrorless camera with a 40.2-megapixel APS-C sensor, the highest resolution of any X-series camera, and the world’s first APS-C camera capable of 8K 30p Apple ProRes format internal recording.

The 40.2-megapixel X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor is combined with a unique image processing algorithm to produce higher image resolution without compromising the signal-to-noise ratio, Fuji said. The new sensor has a base ISO as low as 125 and is complemented by the fastest shutter speed on an X-series camera, with an electronic shutter that increases to 1/180,000 seconds from 1/32,000 seconds on the previous model.

The X-H2 is also the first X-Series camera to feature Pixel Shift Multi-Shot, which uses the camera’s in-body image stabilization (IBIS) system to shift the sensor exactly 20 times and supports a 160-megapixel multi-frame composite high-definition mode.

The Fujifilm X-H2 also supports the HEIF format, with files 30 percent smaller than JPEG, while featuring 10-bit image quality.

Fuji says the new sensor, inherited from the X-H2S, has an improved cooling system and processor that enables the X-H2 to record 8K video in 4:2:2 10-bit color at up to 30p for up to 30 minutes (at a bit rate of 100MBps).

The Fujifilm X-H2 can also shoot 4K video oversampled from 8K resolution and record in three Apple ProRes formats: ProRes 422 HQ, ProRes 422 and ProRes 422 LT. It can also record in ProRes 422 Proxy, which could be particularly useful for 8K editing workflows, given the file size.

Fuji says that thanks to the X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor, the X-H2 can shoot at 4K with 2x digital zoom and virtually no loss of resolution.

When combined with a compatible HDMI recording device, the X-H2 can output 12-bit 8Kp30 RAW video, which can be recorded in Apple ProRes or Blackmagic RAW formats. In addition, Fujifilm’s newly developed F-Log2 flat profile extends the camera’s video dynamic range to more than 13 stops.

Although the X-H2’s sensor is not stacked like the X-H2S, Fuji still says its subject detection autofocus (AF) based on deep learning technology can accurately detect and track a wide range of subjects, including animals, birds, cars, motorcycles, bicycles, airplanes and trains.

Fuji says the new sensor has the “best” ability to achieve AF on subjects and can operate accurately in situations where AF is normally used (such as in landscapes or portraits). The camera also has an autofocus prediction algorithm that the company says is an improvement over previous X-series models. The autofocus algorithm has been optimized for use with video, including when shooting in 8K.

As mentioned earlier, the X-H2 has a 5-axis in-body image stabilization (IBIS) system, which Fujifilm says can be used handheld in situations where support was previously required. The electronic viewfinder is a high-definition, 5.76-million-dot viewfinder with 0.8x magnification and a refresh rate of up to 120 frames per second. The back screen is a 3-inch variable-angle touchscreen with 1.62 million dots and a 3:2 aspect ratio.

The Fujifilm X-H2 body itself has 79 waterproof and dustproof sealing points for a “high level” of dust and moisture resistance and can be used in temperatures down to -10 degrees Celsius. There is a CFexpress B-type card slot and a UHS-II SD card slot. The company says CFexpress cards are needed to achieve the highest performance the camera can achieve.

The Fujifilm X-H2 camera is expected to be available in late September for $1,999.95 (about $13,899.65) for the body only and $2,499.95 (about $17,374.65) for the kit bundled with the XF 16-80mm f / 4 R OIS.
