FreeBSD 14 Stable Planned for Early November, Supports Up to 1024 CPU Cores

The FreeBSD 14.0 release candidate is now online, the developers are working hard to release the FreeBSD 14-RELEASE stable version on November 7 and before that is expected to have at least two more release candidates.

The new release brings a number of hardware support improvements, some enhancements over the FreeBSD 13 series kernels, support for up to 1024 CPU cores, and updated drivers.

FreeBSD 14 was the last release to offer 32-bit systems, and the subsequent FreeBSD 15 will drop support for 32-bit hardware platforms (though FreeBSD 15 will still retain compatibility support for running 32-bit binaries).

ARM64 and AMD64-based FreeBSD 14 is said to support up to 1024 CPU cores, up from the current limit of 256 cores.

In addition, AMD EPYC Bergamo can fully utilize 128 cores and 256 threads per socket, exceeding the current FreeBSD limit, so at least FreeBSD 14.0 will support using these servers with a large number of CPU cores.

In addition to this, FreeBSD 14 will have faster reboots, ISA sound card support has been removed, and the new Intel QAT driver has more features and support than the previous FreeBSD QAT QuickAssist technology driver.

Elsewhere, as seen in previous Beta releases, FreeBSD 14 adds initial support for WiFi6, and a new “fwget” utility for fetching firmware packages – initially fwget fetched firmware for Intel and AMD GPUs.

Numerous other changes include the replacement of Sendmail with DMA, Kinst as the new DTrace provider, makefs adding support for ZFS, boottrace becoming the new interface for capturing traced events during system startups and shutdowns, kernel TLS offloading handles TLS1.3 receiver offloading, she now the default shell for root users, and the kernel TLS offloading handles TLS1.3 offloading. Updated LLVM toolchain updates, and more.
