Ford’s electric car sales up 168% in July, second only to Tesla in the U.S.

Ford Motor Group’s electric vehicle sales reached 30,648 units in July, up 168.7 percent year-over-year, making Ford the second most delivered electric vehicle brand in the United States in July 2022, behind Tesla, TESLARATI reported today.

Ford said the increase in sales for the month was due to several models. Among them were Mach-E sales of 4,970 units, up 74.1 percent year-over-year, E-Transit sales in the commercial market up 13.9 percent year-over-year and sales in the government channel up 46.3 percent year-over-year.

In addition, the Ford F-150 Lightning all-electric pickup sold 2,173 units in July, setting a new monthly delivery record. The vehicle went into production this year on April 26 and was first delivered on May 26. Ford’s electric vehicle sales have been increasing over the past six months, and July’s vehicle sales made Ford the “No. 1 brand in America.

Andrew Frick, vice president of sales, distribution and trucks for Ford’s “Ford Blue” division, said Ford F-Series sales reached 63,341 for the first time this year, successfully surpassing the 60,000 mark, Ford SUV sales reached 73,234, a 70 percent increase from the previous year, and the E-Transit was delivered for the first time in electric vehicles. And the E-Transit has a 95 percent market share in the electric van segment.

Ford is now gaining market share in the electric vehicle market, with 4.4 percent of the market in the first quarter of 2022, rising to 7.7 percent in the second quarter. In July, Ford EVs had a 10.9 percent market share. In addition, Ford’s July EV sales boosted overall Ford sales by 36.6 percent year-over-year and 7.7 percent year-over-year.

In contrast, sales of other brands were not promising. Honda’s July sales in the U.S. were down 47.4% year-over-year, Toyota’s July sales in North America were down 21.2%, Mazda’s July sales in the U.S. were down 28.5%, and Subaru’s July sales in the U.S. were down 17.1%. This means that electric vehicles are taking over the market for traditional internal combustion engine vehicles.

Ford announced its electric vehicle plans on July 26, and the company expects to achieve its goal of producing 2 million electric vehicles annually by 2026. In addition, in order to provide financial support for the electric vehicle business, Ford plans to lay off more than 8,000 employees.
