According to CNN, Ford plans to lay off 700 workers responsible for the production of F-150 Lightning electric pickup trucks. Sources say that this layoff has nothing to do with the ongoing strike by the United Auto Workers Union.
Reports say Ford plans to cut production lines at its Rouge electric vehicle center in Dearborn, Michigan, near the company’s headquarters, switching from three shifts to two shifts, with one shift directly laying off workers.
Ford said that the layoffs were affected by multiple factors. On the one hand, it was a drop in market demand. The company said that sales of F-150 Lightning in the third quarter fell by 45% year-on-year. On the other hand, the company upgraded its production lines this summer.
It was previously reported that Chrysler parent company Stellantis and Ford Motor said they would temporarily lay off 1,250 employees due to the impact of the United Auto Workers (UAW) strike.
Ford said it will temporarily lay off an additional 550 employees following UAW strikes at its Kentucky truck plant and Chicago assembly plant.
Starting Monday, Ford will lay off about 300 workers at a transmission plant in Ohio, about 250 workers at four plants in Michigan and 12 at a Chicago plant. Ford has laid off a total of 2,480 employees since the strike began on September 15. Ford noted that a strike at Kentucky truck plants could affect more than a dozen plants.
