First Gen of Zen architecture not eliminated, AMD turned to Samsung 14nm process

AMD will be upgraded to 5nm Zen4 architecture next month, counting the transitional Zen + architecture, from 2017 to the present 5 years AMD launched 5 generations of Zen architecture, the process upgraded from 14nm to 5nm, but the initial generation of Zen will still not be eliminated, AMD will switch to Samsung 14nm process test production.

News from the industry chain said that AMD originally intended to discontinue the Zen architecture processors 5 years ago, but has now changed its strategy and instead placed an order with Samsung to use the latter’s 14nm process to produce a small number of Zen architecture processors.

The first generation of Zen processors used 14nm production from GF Gecko, but their 14nm technology is also from Samsung 14nm license, theoretically, the process of switching to the Samsung 14nm process will be very smooth.

AMD is doing this mainly because it wants to retain entry-level products for cheap Chromebooks and Windows laptops, after all, the 14nm process is now cheap and the 7nm and 6nm process chips are costly and not suitable for these products.

In the first generation of Zen architecture, AMD brought a new design and process, in which IPC performance jumped 52%, more than the original 40% boost – these are relative to the bulldozer architecture, but the magnitude of the performance increase is really unprecedented.
