A fire broke out at Tesla’s Megapack battery plant in Sydney, Australia at 7:45 pm on Tuesday, and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
Note: The Megapack is one of Australia’s largest battery plants, operated by renewable energy and storage developer Genex Power, with a total of 40 Megapack 2.0 units inside.
The fire broke out at a device nicknamed “Big Bessie” and nearby residents reported hearing loud explosions, colorful flames and the smell of burning plastic.
Genex Power said in a news release that no one was on scene when the fire was first reported and no injuries were reported. After the fire brigade arrived at the scene, they took appropriate isolation measures to control the fire and allowed the battery device to burn out.
Queensland firefighters are currently monitoring gas conditions nearby, and Commander John Platt said local residents did not need to worry about air quality.
