According to reports, blockchain non-profit organization Dfinity Foundation previously sued Meta for trademark infringement. The latest news shows that Meta and Dfinity have settled their dispute by way of a settlement. Both parties asked the court to dismiss the case on the grounds of bias, which means the case cannot be reopened.
A Meta spokesperson said Meta was satisfied with the outcome, adding that the amended lawsuit pointed out the flaws that led Dfinity to drop the suit.
Internet Computer, a decentralized public network with unlimited capacity, is owned by Dfinity. Last May, Dfinity sued Meta, arguing that Meta’s logo, which it adopted after changing its name from Facebook, could be confused with the logo used by Dfinity, explaining that its “continuous loop” logo was a bit like the letter M and that the infinity logo was a symbol of the promising metaverse.
The U.S. District Judge dismissed Dfinity’s original lawsuit but allowed Dfinity to amend the complaint. The judge found that the Meta logo would not be confusing to consumers, that the two designs were different, and that Dfinity’s customers were more likely to be tech-savvy developers. Dfinity amended its complaint last December and re-filed it.
Meta still has a number of trademark lawsuits to settle, such as those brought by VR company MetaX and investment firm Metacapital, all arising from Meta’s name change.
