Facebook boycotted for leaking user information, #deletefacebook on Twitter hot list: new privacy features to follow

Aug. 12 (Xinhua) — Facebook announced Thursday that it is testing an important privacy feature in its Messenger app.

The topic #DeleteFacebook was on the top of the U.S. Twitter charts on the day of the incident after Facebook faced an outcry for providing Nebraska police with Facebook messages about abortion and related activities.

Facebook will begin testing “end-to-end” encryption as the default setting for Messenger chats, Insider reports. End-to-end encryption is understood to be a method of secure communication that ensures that only users participating in a chat can see the content of their messages.

Facebook is understood to have made the announcement about the test after it became embroiled in public controversy. According to court documents, Nebraska police previously provided Facebook with a search warrant to gain access to the person’s Facebook account and subsequently discovered the cause and effect of the mother and daughter’s abortion and how it was performed. At this time, the mother and daughter have pleaded not guilty to criminal charges related to the abortion.

Facebook previously issued a statement saying that they received a legal search warrant from Nebraska police on June 7 before the Supreme Court voted to overturn Roe v. Wade, and that the warrant did not mention abortion.

Facebook did not respond to Insider’s request for comment at this time.
