Europe launches second phase of 6G research and innovation program

Communications World News (CWW) – The Smart Networks and Services Joint Venture (SNS JU) recently adopted its second Research and Innovation Work Plan (2023) to advance 6G research in Europe, according to reliable sources.

On December 14, 2022, the SNS JU adopted its Research and Innovation (R&I) Work Plan for 2023-2024, including information on the 2023 Call for Proposals for Horizon Europe projects. the R&I Work Plan (Annex II of the 2023 SNS Annual Work Plan) will serve as the basis for SNS’ second Call for Proposals, providing 132 The R&I Work Plan (Annex II of the SNS Annual Work Plan 2023) will serve as the basis for the second SNS Call for Proposals, providing €132 million (currently approximately RMB 975 million) in dedicated public funding.

The work plan establishes the second phase of the SNS Roadmap, extending the 35 SNS Phase I Research and Innovation (R&I) projects launched in January 2023. The work plan focuses on complementing research and design in enabling technologies with more systems-oriented research and specialized prototyping and experimentation, as well as long-term research and design of disruptive concepts. It will further address the technical and commercial realization of the 6G vision through joint activities covering industrial and commercial aspects, sustainability and societal challenges, microelectronics, and a series of focused international collaborative activities to support 6G standardization development.

Phase II of the program will be launched on January 17, 2023 and will include the following 3 complementary processes. Process B: Research revolutionary technological advances in preparation for 6G, driving revolutionary advances in IoT, devices and software, with the goal of reaching low to medium Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) and providing innovative solutions for real-life networks, including international collaboration with the US. Process C: SNS System Enabler and Proof of Concept (PoC), with the goal of further developing, federating and consolidating pilot infrastructures across Europe to support all phases of SNS development. Process D: Large-scale vertical-oriented SNS trials and pilots to explore and demonstrate the infrastructure needed for technologies, advanced applications and services in verticals, focusing on the two priorities Automotive and Health, Smart Cities, Agriculture or Education. These 3 processes will be complemented by the SNS Coordination and Support Initiative (CSA) to address societal challenges related to SNS technologies.

Of note, the 2023 SNS R&I Work Plan also highlights a number of indicative R&I themes for 2024 that will be approved later in 2023 and will form the basis of the third SNS Call for Proposals for 2024, providing funding of approximately €129 million (currently about R$953 million).
