Europe and the United States are considering restricting or banning the pairing of parts

According to foreign technology media The Verge, activists advocating the right to repair have set their sights on the next target – parts matching. Europe and the United States are considering introducing corresponding laws and regulations to restrict parts matching.

The most typical example of parts matching is Apple’s iPhone. If a user wants to replace a part, even if it is a part disassembled from another genuine iPhone, it cannot be used without pairing.

It was reported in September this year that the repair website iFixit issued a press release stating that due to Apple’s increasingly stringent post-repair parts matching requirements, the repairability score of the iPhone 14 was lowered from 7 points to 4 points.

Here’s part from iFixit CEO Kyle Wiens:

We gave the iPhone 14 models a very good score last year due to their innovative, repair-friendly architecture. However, most iPhone repairs require Apple's approval, and you have to purchase the part through their system and then verify the repair through the chat system. Otherwise, some functions of the phone will be limited and accompanied by annoying warnings.

The EU is already considering a ban on matching parts. In the U.S., Gay Gordon-Byrne, executive director of repair advocacy group Repair.org, said they have been working to add protections to every state law, including parts pairing restrictions.

The report stated:

In the United States, repair advocates are also setting their sights on more ambitious rules and regulations following recent legislative victories.

Gordon-Byrne said she hopes to see other states follow California's lead and pass their own right-to-repair bills in the coming years.

This could mean coverage for devices subject to the latest laws, expanded software support in the long term, or limited part pairing.
