Elon Musk: Tesla Cybertruck limited production this summer, mass production in 2024

Tesla Cybertruck’s limited production is scheduled to begin this summer, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said on the fourth quarter 2022 earnings call.

During Tesla’s fourth-quarter and full-year 2022 earnings call, Musk and Tesla were asked if the all-electric Cybertruck was still scheduled to go into production in early 2023. Musk replied.

“We do hope to start production sometime this summer, but I always downplay the start of production because production is always very slow.”

Tesla also said at its shareholder meeting that production of the Cybertruck “is still on track to begin later this year.

Musk noted that the start of car production is relatively unimportant because manufacturing volumes will increase over time. Starts are always slow, and things will get better over time as the company improves its car manufacturing process.

Mass production is the most important, as Tesla needs to handle the massive order for 1.5 million cars that Cybertruck has received since its 2019 launch. Musk noted that Cybertruck mass production will begin in 2024, later than previously expected by the end of 2023.

Tesla began installing equipment that will be used to produce the Cybertruck, such as casting and final assembly body shop, but that mass production will come in 2024. In January, a drone view of Tesla’s Texas mega-factory showed that IDRA’s 9,000-ton Giga Press die-casting machine, which will be used for Cybertruck bodies, is being rapidly assembled.

The Cybertrucks molds have recently arrived at the Texas superfactory. The bill of lading shows that the molds arrived in the U.S. on Jan. 16 and were picked up and shipped to the plant two days later.

Tesla reported total revenue of $24.3 billion for the fourth quarter of 2022, up 37 percent year-over-year; net income attributable to Tesla common shareholders of $3.7 billion, up 59 percent year-over-year; and adjusted earnings per share of $1.07, up 57 percent year-over-year.
