Elon Musk: finalize site selection for the new Tesla factory by the end of this year

Tesla CEO Elon Musk revealed in an interview with the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday, that the electric car maker could announce the site of its next factory by the end of 2023.

“We’ll probably choose another location by the end of this year,” Elon Musk said in an interview earlier today. Speculation has been swirling for months that Tesla is competing for the leading electric car maker’s next manufacturing plant at multiple locations around the world.

When asked if Elon Musk was interested in building a factory in India, he said, “Absolutely.”

Tesla already operates several production plants around the world: one in Fremont, California, another in Austin, Texas, one in Berlin, Germany, and one in Shanghai, China. Earlier this year, Tesla also announced that it would build another production plant in Mexico, but the ground has not yet been broken on that facility.

There is no indication yet where the new plant will eventually be built. However, India’s deputy minister of science and technology said in an interview last week that Tesla’s plan to build a manufacturing base in India is “serious. Tesla is working to expand its vehicle production globally.

In addition, recent meetings with Elon Musk and government officials suggest that France is expected to be the site of Tesla’s next factory, but the reality may be much more complicated. In addition to France, Canada should also be an expected location for many people.

Tesla’s Fremont and Shanghai mega-factories are already producing cars at maximum capacity, while the Berlin and Austin plants are expanding production. The company is already on track to meet its production goal of 1.8 million vehicles by 2023. However, Musk said that Tesla is on track to produce 2 million vehicles this year.

If all goes according to plan, Tesla should locate the new factory by the end of 2023.
