Elon Musk explains why SpaceX Starbase is located in Texas

Elon Musk explained in an upcoming interview why SpaceX chose Texas as the location for its “Starbase. According to a clip of the interview shared on Twitter by American talk show host Jay Leno, Elon Musk said, “We needed a place that was out of the way. It’s a huge rocket that sometimes explodes, so it needs to be in a remote location.”

Elon Musk added that the launch site would also need to face the ocean, facing south and east. “When you launch to the east, you can use the rotation of the Earth to get into orbit,” he said.

That way, even if something goes wrong, he said, the rocket debris won’t fall on people.

SpaceX’s commercial launch site for orbital missions, called Starbase, is located in Boca Chica, Texas. It is also where the company’s engineers are building and developing the Starship spacecraft.

In this interview, Elon Musk takes Reno on a tour of SpaceX’s Starbase facility. The interview will officially air on September 21 at 10 p.m. ET.
