Dutch welfare agency UWV illegally collects beneficiary data, secretly places cookies

According to the Dutch Times (NL Times), the government welfare agency UWV illegally collected the data of beneficiaries. The NOS and Nieuwsuur investigations revealed that the agency continuously analyzed and tracked the use of the UWV website by people receiving unemployment benefits to investigate whether they were in a foreign country illegally while receiving benefits.

At the same time, UWV also secretly places cookies on the website to track users, and logged-in users can be identified and automatically obtain IP addresses.

It is learned from reports that the government’s permanent law firm, Landsadvocaat, said it would shut down the UWV system earlier this year. In this regard, the UWV stated that it is very important to enforce the law carefully, and it is very regrettable that this kind of thing happened.

It is understood UWV’s illegal online surveillance not only leads to breaches of the Data Protection Act but also allows scammers to go unpunished, as 580 ongoing investigations have now been terminated, even if fraud has been proven.
