The new vehicle will be available for pre-order in the price range of RMB 700,000-1.6 million and will be listed and delivered in 2023. As the first model of Dongfeng Motor’s luxury electric off-road brand, the Mastodon 917 is based on the M TECH Mastodon intelligent off-road architecture. It will be available in two power types: extended-range and pure electric, with the pure electric version equipped with four motors and a “crab mode”.
In terms of the exterior, the new vehicle adopts a design concept inspired by the “Eastern Lion” and is a good reproduction of the design of the previous concept car. The overall shape of the car is very tough, in line with the brand’s personality, while the mechatronic design brings a more futuristic feel to the vehicle. The dimensions of the vehicle are 4987 mm2080 mm1935 mm in length, width and height respectively.
On the side, the vehicle has a more squared-off shape and bold lines, with flared wheel arches, giving it a strong sense of sportiness and off-road performance. The new vehicle also features concealed door handles, in line with current trends, and a rear window landing ladder, which brings a good level of practicality to the vehicle.
Power is provided by four electric motors at the front and rear, with a power output of over 1,000bhp and over 16,000N/m of torque at the wheels, and a two-speed gearbox with integrated differential lock. It also features a two-speed gearbox with an integrated differential lock, which enables acceleration to zero 100 in 4.2 seconds and a maximum gradient of 100%. The new model will also have some water-wading capability and external discharge.
The Mastodon off-road all-terrain intelligent solution, M-ATS, supports five off-road driving modes: “snow, mud, sand, rock and water” and the intelligent off-road “AUTO” mode. In addition, the M ATS is equipped with a number of technological features: an air suspension system, VMC chassis dynamic field control technology, rear-wheel steering by wire (for “crabbing” mode), off-road triple lock and an intelligent road recognition system. In addition, the Mastodon will also offer a number of intelligent off-road black technologies, including drones, security systems, etc.
At last year’s launch, the new car had L3 intelligent driving assistance system, supporting high-speed/elevated auto-driving navigation, urban auto-driving navigation, etc. It will also be equipped with technologies such as drone accompanying flight, reverse charging, valet parking, crabbing mode (minimum turning radius 5.1m), VMC chassis dynamic domain control technology and other selling points.
