Docker Desktop 4.11 Released: Support for Virtual Desktops, Mac Permission Changes and more

0

Docker Desktop 4.11 is now live. In this release, some highly requested features have been added, aimed at making life easier for developers and helping security-conscious organizations grow more easily.

Run Docker Desktop for Windows in a virtual desktop environment

Docker Desktop for Windows officially supports Docker Business subscribers on VMware ESXi and Azure Windows VMs. Now you can use Docker Desktop in a virtual environment and get the same experience as running it locally on your Windows, Mac or Linux computer.

Currently, supported host hypervisors are VMware ESXi or Windows Hyper-V virtual environments – on-premises and in the cloud. Citrix Hypervisor support is also coming soon. As a Docker Business subscriber, you get dedicated support for running Docker Desktop in virtual environments.

Changes to permission requirements for Docker Desktop for Mac

The first time you run Docker Desktop for Mac, you must authenticate as root to install the privileged helper process. This process requires a limited set of privileged operations to be performed and runs in the background on the host machine while Docker Desktop is running.

In Docker Desktop v4.11, you don’t have to run this permission helper service at all. Set everything up front with the –user flag in the install command. Docker Desktop will run without root on Mac.

New extensions for Docker Desktop

Added two new extensions to the extension store:

1.vcluster – Use vcluster to create and manage virtual Kubernetes clusters.

  1. PGAdmin4 – Use the PGAdmin4 tool to quickly manage and monitor PostgreSQL databases.

Customize your Docker desktop theme

Prefer dark mode on the Docker dashboard? In 4.11, you can now customize your preferences or have it respect your system settings. Go to Settings on the top right to try it out for yourself.
