Counterpoint Research today released a report saying that shipments of XR (extended reality) devices will exceed the 10 million mark for the first time in 2021, up 60 percent year-over-year.
The report points out that the growth rate has slowed this year because the new mass-grade devices have not yet been launched, but the market is expected to accelerate the pace of growth next year, with annual shipments reaching about 48 million units in 2025.
Meta has recently announced its new Quest Pro, which Counterpoint Research says also has eye and face tracking capabilities, unlike previous devices that only had hand tracking.
In addition, the report says competition will intensify with the expected release of Sony’s PlayStation VR 2 and Apple’s first XR headset next year. Device specifications will be the focus of attention as major OEMs move in for a piece of the action.
