Counterpoint: Cameras and SoC chips are important to upgrade points

Counterpoint agency preview report said that the upward shift in the industry is driven by emerging markets such as Southeast Asia, where consumers are becoming willing to pay more for features that were only available on high-end devices a few years ago.

The report says the smartphone market has been moving toward better-quality products over the past five years. This has been driven by technological advances in various components, as well as consumers becoming more willing to pay more for their devices — especially in emerging markets. two of the key areas of development are as follows:
1) cameras, which now typically have three or four cameras to overcome the limitations of smartphone size.
2) the continued rise in SoC processing speeds to support today’s complex imaging systems.
3) the continued rise in SoC processing speed to support the AI algorithms required for today’s complex imaging systems.

“Technology advances are what drive the industry upward, which is why we have access to better cameras, longer battery life, more storage, faster phones, and more. While the average selling price (ASP) of smartphones is rising, these increases are not commensurate with the better experience offered at this price,” noted Tarun Pathak, director of smartphone research at Counterpoint. “Interestingly, consumers in emerging markets such as Southeast Asia and Latin America are helping ASPs grow at a faster rate than the global average, with a large number of price-sensitive consumers upgrading their original device to their second or third device. In Southeast Asia, average selling prices have grown an average of 15 percent per year over the past three years, while Latin America also saw double-digit year-over-year growth last year.

The availability and integration of chips such as the MediaTek Skyguard 9000 5G is helping OEMs such as TECNO to enter the high-end competition with their upcoming Phantom X2 flagship product. The superior camera experience solidifies TECNO’s new flagship model and its penetration in the high-end market.

The TECNO product portfolio is about to evolve into a high-end product,” said Jimmy Hsu, Associate Director of TECNO’s Imaging R&D Center. The Phantom X2 flagship with the Skyguard 9000 5G culminates this strategy, and one of its great assets is that it solves one of the challenges of smartphone photography, great night photography.”

The TECNO Phantom X2 flagship phone is expected to be released in December this year.
