Chrome 106 new feature: allow users to close new tab page promotional ads

When you visit Google Home or visit a new tab page using Chrome, you may see promotions and ads at the bottom of the search box. Back in 2019, Google began testing a feature that would let users turn off promotional promotions on Chrome new tabs, but the upcoming Chrome 106 stable release will officially bring the feature live, allowing users to turn off these promotional ads.

Chrome’s new tabs are not only used to display recently visited and frequently visited websites, but Google has also built-in promotional content and sometimes urgent and non-urgent news.

For example, sometimes users may see the “Meet Google Home Max. now in stock” promotion in the Chrome new tab. Clicking on it will take you to the Google Store page for the product in question.

Previously, Chrome did not offer an “X” option to turn off these promotional ads, but users can now eliminate them by clicking on the option [X] with their mouse. Back in 2019, Chrome added an experimental Flag for “NTP dismiss promos,” but removed this option in the same year.

While this experimental flag is still not live, it is enabled by default in all pre-release versions of Chrome, including Beta. Chrome 106 stable is expected to be released on September 27.
