The Spanish Ministry of Industry issued a statement announcing that negotiations with Chery were successful and a formal agreement would be signed in the next few days to help Chery build its first manufacturing base in Europe.
According to Automotive News Europe, Chery plans to restart Nissan Motor plants that were closed in 2021 and plans to bring some previous employees back to work.
The report also mentioned that Spain will also open two new indicators for electric vehicle companies this year, providing a total of 1.7 billion euros in loans and subsidies for electric vehicles, which is also part of the European PERTE plan.
According to reports, Chery will subsequently produce and sell cars at the Barcelona plant, mainly electric cars, for Europe. However, the local electric vehicle market share is only 12%, half that of Portugal and France.
In addition to electric vehicles, Chery will also introduce fuel vehicles and hybrid vehicles, and plans to launch its first electric vehicle in the German market in the first half of this year: Omenda 5 EV, priced at about 37,000 euros (Note: currently about 289,000 euros) Starting from RMB (RMB).
Ownership of the former Nissan factory has been handed over to Spanish electric motorcycle company Silence, as well as local engineering groups QEV and EV Motors, who plan to transform the factory into an electric vehicle hub.
Sources also mentioned that EV Motors, which also plans to produce electric trucks and vans with Chery under its Ebro brand, is involved in talks with Chery.
