ChatGPT: A study says AI has the biggest impact on teaching posts

April 3 – A new study shows that generative artificial intelligence technologies such as ChatGPT are having a greater impact on education, so educators need to adapt to the trend more quickly.

ChatGPT

Since the release of ChatGPT, issues such as how to deal with students using artificial intelligence to cheat in coursework have caught the attention of many universities and colleges. But recent research by professors at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, New York University and Princeton University suggests that educators should have the same concerns about their jobs.

In an analysis of occupations across occupations impacted by advances in large-scale language modelling technology, eight of the top 10 were teaching positions. Professor Robert Seamans, the co-author of the study, said, “We were surprised to find when we did the analysis that in many cases, education jobs ranked very high.”

The study shows that higher education teachers in English language and literature, foreign languages and history are most affected by artificial intelligence.

While there is growing evidence that high-skilled occupations may also be affected by AI, typically mechanical, routine jobs are the ones most affected by technology, while high-skilled jobs are thought to have more barriers. But the latest study finds the opposite to be true. “High-skilled jobs may be more vulnerable than other jobs,” said study co-author Professor Manav Raj, a professor at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

However, the jobs considered to be “most affected by AI” do not necessarily mean that the people doing them will be replaced.

“ChatGPT can be used to help a professor develop a syllabus or recommend reading material related to a specific topic,” said Raj, who is not currently worried about being replaced by AI. For very content-intensive topics, ChatGPT can also help design teaching slides and classroom practice questions, he says, “or even help educators translate some lessons or key points in simpler language.”

Education technology company Udemy has been selling ChatGPT-based language learning modules to help language teachers design lessons. Online language learning company Multi Neighbors also uses AI technology to support online testing applications, using ChatGPT to generate text passages for reading comprehension and AI to detect suspected test cheating.

AI technology can also help teachers generate course content and increase the speed and scale of adding great material to the platform. Not everyone has equal access to great teachers and great learning conditions, and AI offers the best opportunity to extend quality education to everyone who needs it, according to Clinton Bicknell, head of AI at Multi-Neighborhood.

Some professors are wary of ChatGPT and its capabilities. For example, Amherst College English professor Kristina Reardon says professors need to have a bottom line when considering ChatGPT’s role in writing.

“No matter how good ChatGPT is, I believe we can learn a lot from conceptualizing, drafting, revising, editing, etc. Writing is an iterative process, and it helps us think,” Reardon said.

Many universities have issued guidelines to professors on how to use ChatGPT and how to expand the teaching experience while maintaining academic integrity.

Princeton University recommends that professors explicitly use ChatGPT in their syllabi and use it to enhance group discussions and use ChatGPT-generated content to compare to students’ own submitted drafts of papers.

Morten Christiansen, a professor of psychology at Cornell University, said that regardless of the university’s general guidelines, each faculty member is free to decide what works best for his or her teaching.

Many professors have already begun using ChatGPT in their classes.

Laurent Dubreuil, a professor of French and comparative literature at Cornell University, is currently having students assess the boundaries of academic freedom because the latest version of ChatGPT “now has a set of parameters for what is acceptable speech and what should not be said.”

Christensen said ChatGPT can help level the playing field for students. He says, “It can serve as a personal tutor and students have the opportunity to evaluate ChatGPT’s results.”

Many current generative AI language models can create what AI experts consider “illusions. But in fact, ChatGPT’s technical shortcomings also offer new opportunities for teaching and learning. By having students ask specific questions related to the course content and analyze the answers generated by ChatGPT, students can hone their critical analysis skills.

Kristensen says, “ChatGPT will make things up and look confident in what they say, including adding quotes that don’t actually exist.”

Ethan Mollick, a professor of entrepreneurship at Wharton, has become an evangelist for generative AI experiments in education and wants his students to use ChatGPT in every document, including marketing materials, graphics, blog posts, and new job applications.

“I think we have to realize that this is part of our lives and we have to figure out how to deal with it,” he says.

Moric doesn’t think facing it means eventually being replaced.

“We have to recognize that we need to change the way we approach things and embrace this new technology,” he said. “We’ve adapted to other technological changes, and I think we’ll adapt this time, too.”
