After years of persuasion by Google, Apple plans to adopt the Rich Communication Services (RCS) standard. An Apple spokesperson revealed that it will support RCS in messaging applications next year. The original statement is as follows: Later next year, we will add support for the RCS Universal Profile. The standard is currently published by the GSM Association. We believe the RCS universal profile will provide a better interoperability experience compared to SMS or MMS. This will sit alongside iMessage, which will continue to provide Apple users with the best and most secure messaging experience.

According to Apple, RCS will “work with iMessage” and will improve communication between iPhone and Android users. iMessage will continue to be the default method of iPhone-to-iPhone communication, while RCS will replace the existing SMS and MMS standards. SMS and MMS remain available as backup methods if necessary.

RCS service is a communication protocol designed and adopted by Google. Smartphone manufacturers and carriers around the world have adopted RCS, but Apple has resisted adoption. To this end, Google has been pushing Apple to accept RCS through long-term advertising campaigns such as billboards, websites, and social media pressure.

Google has set up a website called “Get the Message” since August 2022, calling on Apple to “fix” text messages between iPhone and Android users. Earlier this year, even Samsung got in on the PR spree, releasing a bizarre ad featuring a “Romeo” with green bubbles and a “Romeo with blue bubbles” due to Apple’s delay in adopting RCS. Juliet” can’t be together.

“Green bubbles and blue bubbles want to be together,” Samsung wrote in the ad, which also used the #GetTheMessage hashtag used by Google in its social media promotions.

RCS supports higher-resolution photos and videos, audio messages, and larger file sizes than MMS and SMS, the text messaging standards used by Apple. It also improves chat encryption between iPhone and Android users, cross-platform emoji reactions, and increases the reliability of group chats across different devices.

With RCS, real-time typing indicators, read receipts, better photos and videos, and much-improved group chat will become standard on iPhone and Android phones, ending some iPhone users’ struggles with Android smartphones. The frustration users experience when communicating. Apple says that while RCS improves the security of messages across devices, it is not as secure as iMessage.

According to Apple, RCS will give users the option to share their location with others within a text message conversation, and like iMessage, RCS will run over Wi-Fi networks in addition to cellular networks.

As early as September 2022, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that adopting RCS was not a top priority for Apple. “I’m not hearing our users ask us to put a lot of effort into this at this point,” he said. It’s unclear why Apple changed its stance, but the company is facing multiple countries over its App Store, iMessage and other proprietary technologies. regulatory scrutiny, so adoption of RCS may be seen as a willingness to work with other companies to improve device interoperability.”

For example, the European Union has been developing legislation that would require Apple to modify iMessage so that it can be used on other platforms. With RCS, iMessage will no longer have so many advantages that are unavailable across platforms.

Going forward, Apple plans to work with Google and other GSMA members to further improve RCS. RCS support will be rolled out in a software update next year, and operators will need to implement support for full functionality. In the US, Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T already support RCS.

Theoretically the amount of revenue sharing should be kept secret, but Google witnesses accidentally leaked this figure in an antitrust lawsuit by the U.S. Department of Justice.

An economic expert representing Apple said Google would have to pay Apple 36% of all revenue it makes from search ads on its Safari browser, which includes iPhones, iPads and Macs.

Google’s lead lawyer “visibly cringed” when he revealed the revenue figures, which are supposed to be confidential, Bloomberg reported.

Last month, wealth management company Bernstein said that Apple receives $18-20 billion in revenue from Google every year, accounting for about 15% of Apple’s annual operating profit.

Google has been the default search engine on Apple devices since 2002, although the agreement between the two companies has been revised several times. Apple made a lot of money from the deal, and Google became the default search option on the world’s most popular smartphone.

The U.S. Department of Justice is currently investigating Google for alleged monopoly, and Google’s profitable search engine deal with Apple has been the main focus of the legal battle, which is expected to last until the end of November.

Last October, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said the agreement between Apple and Google made it impossible for other search engines like Bing to compete. “You wake up in the morning, brush your teeth, and then you search on Google. The way habits are formed, the only way to change them is to change the default settings.”

In October last year, Apple services chief Eddie Cue testified at the trial that Google was the default search engine on the iPhone because it was the best choice. “We make Google the default search engine because we have always believed that is the best.” Apple has been unable to change this arrangement because there is no “effective alternative.”

It is worth mentioning that although Google is the default search engine on Apple devices, users can also manually switch to engines such as Yahoo, Bing, DuckDuckGo or Ecosia, but this requires entering the settings interface of the Safari browser.

Apple Health launched two studies in 2019, the “Apple Heart and Movement Study” and the “Apple Women’s Health Study”. To celebrate today’s World Diabetes Day, it shared information about blood sugar and related research results on patients with diabetes.

These scientific research results help diabetic patients gain a deeper understanding of the impact of different foods, activities, and life stressors on blood sugar. In addition, combined with Apple Watch data on activity, step count, sleep, and menstrual cycles, it provides scientists with new insights.

Attached are some results of Apple’s “Apple Heart and Movement Study” and “Apple Women’s Health Study” as follows:

Participants who increased their daily physical activity, or increased the number of steps they walked each day, increased the average percentage of time each day their blood glucose was maintained in the target range of 70-180 mg/dL.

People who exercised for more than 30 minutes a day were within the target range of 70-180 mg/dL 78.8% of the time.

Female participants walked 10,000 steps per day and were seen staying within the 70-180 mg/dL target range most of the time; compared to 76.4% of male participants.

An analysis of 1982 menstrual cycles revealed a slight increase in the duration that blood glucose levels remained within the ideal range of 70-180 mg/dL during the follicular phase. It is characterized by low progesterone levels (average 68.5% of the day) and an average luteal phase of 66.8% of ideal blood sugar.

Participants also spent slightly less time outside their blood glucose target range during the follicular phase (28.9%) compared with the luteal phase (30.9%).

Google confirmed to the court that Epic had received an agreement worth US$147 million to put its popular game “Fortnite” on the Google Play Store.

Purnima Kochikar, vice president of partnerships at Google Play, said the deal was approved and submitted to Epic, but not accepted.

Epic will receive the money in phases under the three-year “incremental funding” plan, which runs through 2021. The agreement is designed to prevent popular apps from bypassing Google’s cut.

In fact, Epic made the Android version of Fortnite available directly through its official website in 2018, bypassing the Play Store and eliminating the need to pay Google the Play Store commission. In an antitrust lawsuit filed later in 2020, Epic said the decision briefly sent Google into panic.

Citing internal documents, it said Google was concerned that this approach could have “contagion risks,” meaning other game developers (including Blizzard, Valve, Sony, and Nintendo) would follow Epic’s lead.

Epic also claims that Google tried to prevent this from happening by offering special benefits or even acquiring Epic.

Lawrence Koh, the departed head of Google Play games business development, testified in court on Tuesday that these “contagious” documents were submitted to the court.

Google believes that almost all leading game developers are considering withdrawing from the Play Store after seeing Epic’s move, which may cause Google to lose billions of dollars in revenue.

Court documents predict that if “Fortnite” leads to a subsequent large-scale “evacuation”, it may cause Google to suffer a direct revenue loss of 130 to 250 million US dollars. There may also be indirect losses of up to US$3.6 billion.

Google said it was just concerned about the loss of games on the Play Store and had no malicious intent. “We just want developers to choose Play,” Koh said. “We think getting games on the service is a worthwhile investment.”

According to the contents of the 10-K document submitted by Apple, the company estimates that starting in 2024, it will be forced to support the operation of third-party app stores in the European market.

Apple has previously tried to lobby the EU to support the App Store due to security and other factors. At least some important parts of it can be modified. However, with the implementation of the “Digital Market Act”, Apple admitted in the document that it would not be applicable to the European market. App Store adjustments are inevitable.

Part of Apple’s 10-K document as follows:

The company plans to change its existing business model in the future. For example, it must comply with the requirements of the EU's Digital Market Act and adjust the App Store before March 2024.

These future changes could affect how much companies charge developers, how they manage app distribution outside of the App Store, how they let developers communicate with consumers within the App Store about alternative purchase mechanisms, and more.

These changes could reduce sales and affect the commissions earned by the Company, which could adversely affect the Company's business, results of operations and financial condition.

Meta’s Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth answered a question about whether Meta plans to support 2D Android applications during yesterday’s Instagram AMA (Ask Me Anything) event.

“There’s nothing stopping Android developers from bringing their APKs that are already running on Android phones into VR. They just need to send us the APKs. They may need to make some slight modifications, depending on how they want to set it up,” he said. control scheme, but maybe not even that much of a modification is needed. We don’t have any automatic way to import these apps, and we’re hoping Google will bring their Play Store into VR. We’ve asked them, but they don’t want to do that , so it’s up to the developers themselves.”

Quest already has the ability to run 2D Android apps in the home interface, which float in front of the user. However, there are currently only two Android phone/tablet applications available on the Quest store, namely Meta’s own Messenger and WhatsApp. However, users can use their computers to install Android APKs, but applications that require Google Play Services runtime cannot be used properly.

Quest also supports progressive web apps (PWA), and there are a few such apps on the Quest store, such as Adobe Acrobat, Lastpass, Peacock, Coursera and Monday.com.

Technically, the Quest’s built-in web browser is also a 2D app that can be called up within an immersive app.

Meanwhile, Apple has confirmed that “almost all” iPad and iPhone apps will be available on the Vision Pro when it ships. And Google is developing its own Android XR platform for upcoming Samsung headsets, which will likely include the Play Store and its slew of 2D apps.

One of the core reasons why Mark Zuckerberg acquired Oculus in 2014 for about US$3 billion is to reduce his company’s commitment to the next generation of personal computers. Dependence on platform owners Apple and Google. But these existing platforms may have a lasting impact when it comes to 2D applications, which could become one of Meta’s major weaknesses in the XR space.
