It is reported that the full name of the RE engine is “Reach for the Moon”. It was developed by Capcom. It was originally designed for the game “Resident Evil 7” and has since been widely used in other Capcom games. The engine logo is a hand reaching out to grab the moon. image, which symbolizes that “using it can turn your dream of developing games into reality.”

The RE engine was created in 2014, during the early stages of the development of Resident Evil 7. The engine was designed with the linear characteristics of Resident Evil 7 in mind to improve the efficiency of game development.

The team’s reason for not choosing a third-party engine was that “highly versatile engines developed by other companies were not suitable” for a game like Resident Evil 7. Capcom’s previous engine, MT Framework, was ultimately evaluated and canceled and was not used for the project due to its slow development tool speed.

Jun Takeuchi, head of Capcom Development 1, previously said: “We had to rethink the way we make games. In order to conduct globally mainstream asset-based development (graphics and 3D model elements), we began developing the new RE engine.”
