Canada Drafts New Rules: Universal Charging Standards for Smartphones

After the European Union and India, Canada is recently drafting new regulations to establish a common charging standard for smartphones, tablets, laptops, cameras and other devices in 2023.

Canada recently released a 2023 Budget [PDF] report, and the translation part of IT House is as follows:

The federal government will take the lead, working with multiple international partners and other stakeholders, to explore the implementation of standard charging ports across Canada with the goal of lowering costs for Canadians and reducing e-waste.

Over the past decade, manufacturers have developed a variety of chargers for phones, tablets, cameras, laptops, and other devices. Every time Canadians buy a new device, they need to buy a new charger to go with them, driving up costs and increasing e-waste.

The report did not explicitly select the USB-C port as a universal charging standard. The European Union issued new regulations at the end of last year, requiring that all new mobile phones sold in the region must use the USB-C port to charge them before December 28, 2024.

The new EU regulation forces Apple to switch to using a USB-C port in the iPhone 15 series, though Apple will still require related accessories to comply with MFi certification.
