BOE is unlikely to replace Samsung as the top screen supplier for the iPhone 16

Tianfeng Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo released a prediction earlier this January that BOE will beat Samsung in orders for the upcoming iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro. By 2024, BOE will start shipping high-end LTPO displays for the iPhone on a large scale, making it the largest display supplier, and its share of screen supply for the iPhone 16 series could even reach 70 percent.

However, according to Korean media The Elec, due to technical and patent issues, it is expected that BOE will find it difficult to significantly increase iPhone OLED shipments this year, and it will also be difficult to surpass Samsung as Apple’s top screen supplier for the iPhone 16.

According to the report, BOE’s OLED screen yield rate has been lower than that of two Korean companies, Samsung Display and LG Display. In addition, the patent infringement warning displayed by Samsung may be another major pressure on BOE.

Samsung Display supplies screens for all four models of the iPhone 15 series, while LG Display supplies screens for two models of the iPhone 15 Pro. BOE supplies OLED screens for the iPhone 15 series.

This year’s iPhone 15 series will be based on thin-film field-effect transistor (TFT) technology, with two standard iPhone 15 models (6.1-inch and 6.7-inch) using low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) technology, and two iPhone 15 Pro models (6.1-inch and 6.7 inches) use low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) technology. Compared with the LTPS process, LTPO consumes less power and is more technically difficult.

BOE estimates that it will provide LTPS-type OLED panels for the iPhone 15 standard version, but will provide LTPO-type OLED panels for the iPhone 16 Pro models launched next year.
