BMW spends 650 million euros to transform Munich’s century-old factory

People often describe the slow pace of overseas car companies’ transformation into new energy and intelligent connectivity as “turning around in a disaster”. BMW, one of the German auto giants with a century-old history, announced today that, The century-old Munich factory will undergo an upgrade and will only produce pure electric vehicles from the end of 2027.

The factory dates back to 1922. BMW said the factory is the “heart” of BMW, is innovative and adaptable, and will be completely renovated while producing about 1,000 vehicles per day. To this end, BMW will invest 650 million euros (Note: currently about 5.096 billion RMB) to complete the transformation of the plant and produce the new Neue Klasse sedan in 2026.

According to reports, BMW’s Munich factory is a “model” for the company’s smooth transition to the era of electric vehicles. In 2015, the factory realized the co-production of the plug-in hybrid 3 Series and the fuel version of the 3 Series; in 2021, the pure electric i4 model will roll out of the same production line. The €650 million investment will cover four buildings, including a new vehicle assembly line, logistics areas and new body shops.

According to previous reports, BMW’s factory in Munich has ended internal combustion engine production on November 15, 2023, marking the end of an era.

The last internal combustion engine produced at the Munich plant was a V8 that rolled off the assembly line on November 10, German media outlet BR24 reported. The plant’s 1,200 employees will be retrained and placed in other positions or at other BMW plants.

The Munich plant has been producing the i4 electric vehicle since October 2021 and will also be the production base for future electric vehicles based on the Neue Klasse platform. BMW Blog understands that other electric cars to be built in Munich include the electric 3 Series (known as the i3), the i3 Touring and the second-generation i4. The automaker has confirmed it will launch six electric vehicles based on the Neue Klasse platform between 2025 and 2027.
