BMW i4 owner receives notice car parked on a steep slope can not be upgraded

BMW i4 owner Clare Eliza recently received a notice that confused her: “The road is too steep to start the update process. Please park the vehicle in a flat area before updating. This means that BMW i4 vehicles parked on a steep slope will not be able to perform the update.

BMW i4 is equipped with a variety of sensors for pitch, yaw, lateral and longitudinal acceleration and deceleration, and the car is able to detect for itself whether it is parked on a flat surface,” said a BMW spokesperson. This is a safety precaution to prevent the vehicle from being upgraded properly in a bad situation and to avoid situations such as slippery slopes affecting the system upgrade”.

BMW officials said the vehicle parked on a flat surface is not the only upgrade system requirement.

  • The vehicle will be upgraded only after an available software update is detected.
  • Need to download it in advance. The download is fully automatic when connected to the Internet via cell phone or BMW Connected App.
  • The vehicle must have a sufficient charge.
  • The vehicle cannot be parked on a steep slope.
  • Transmission must be in Park.
  • The engine must be turned off.
