BMW and India’s Tata Technologies partner to develop autonomous driving

Indian giant Tata announced today that the BMW Group and global product engineering and digital services company Tata Technologies have signed an agreement to establish a joint venture to establish Automotive Software and IT Development Center.

Officials said the joint venture will leverage Tata Technologies’ digital engineering expertise and talent pool in India to contribute to the BMW Group’s strategic expansion of software coding capabilities across global IT centers and around-the-clock operations. Tata Technologies and BMW Group will each hold 50% stake in the newly formed company.

The joint venture will focus on strategic software development, including solutions for “software-defined vehicles” (SDV). Automotive software will focus on autonomous driving, infotainment and digital services. From the inception of the joint venture, 100 highly trained and experienced Tata technology professionals will ensure strong direct contribution to software projects. Tata even said that in the next few years, the joint venture may quickly grow to a four-digit scale.

According to previous reports, Vikram Pawah, president of BMW’s India business, said in February this year that the company would sell 1,474 electric vehicles in India in 2023, accounting for about 10% of sales, and he expected that by 2025 Electric vehicles will account for 25% of its sales in India this year.

According to reports, BMW, which launched battery-powered vehicles in India last year, currently sells five pure electric models locally, the most of any automaker. BMW India’s annual sales of its three brands (BMW, MINI and BMW Motorrad) reached 14,172 units in 2023, an increase of 18% year-on-year, all hitting record highs.
