Apple is considering bringing back Touch ID for its flagship iPhone models, but despite the testing, it has undergone, the feature is unlikely to return to its mainstream smartphone line-up any time soon. The switch from Touch ID to Face ID has its benefits and pitfalls, but there are still some users who favor fingerprint readers. While feelings for the old system remain strong, it doesn’t look like Apple will be going backward with Face ID on future generations of iPhones.
In Bloomberg’s “Power On” newsletter on Sunday, Mark Gurman wrote that Apple has discussed the possibility of using Touch ID on the high-end iPhone again.
Apple has also reportedly tested features such as in-screen Touch ID, which have been reported before but not ultimately in the final product. There was also mention of a trial of adding Touch ID to the power button, as was done with the iPad Air 4, but this too did not materialize.
Gurman wrote: “At this point, I believe Face ID is here to stay, and Touch ID will not be returning to the flagship iPhone – at least for any time in the foreseeable future.”
While the chances of an iPhone 15 with Touch ID are slim, Gurman believes that the way Touch ID is arranged on the power button could still be used on lower price-oriented models, such as the iPhone SE.
