Despite Apple’s reported success in developing its own chips, Intel executives said the company could win back Apple as a customer. Apple has largely abandoned Intel chips in its Mac line. All but one computer, the Mac has been using Apple’s own chips. Although Apple may eventually completely switch to its own chips and abandon Intel products, the chip giant still believes it has a chance to renew its relationship with Apple.
Michelle Johnston Holthaus, executive vice president of Intel’s client computing business group, explained Intel’s chip efforts at the Intel Innovation Conference on Tuesday, local time, while also mentioning Apple.
Holthaus insisted that Intel “will never give up on renewing its relationship with Apple. It is not clear what other remarks Holthaus made on the topic at the time, except that Intel “wants high performance for all.
Since the launch of Apple’s own chip, this comment is not the first time Intel’s top executives commented on the damage caused by this move to the relationship between the two sides.
Intel CEO Pat Kirsinger (Pat Gelsinger) also previously insisted that he would not give up hope and would still try to get Macs to use Intel processors again, but that would require them to develop better chips.
“Apple thinks they can make a better chip than us on their own.” Kirsinger said, “You know, they do perform very well. So we had to develop a product that was better than Apple’s own chips.”
As Intel continues to develop its foundry services, it is entirely possible that Apple will hand over some of its foundry business to Intel in addition to its existing foundry, TSMC. There are reports that Intel has tried to secure future chip production orders from Apple in late 2021.
