MacRumors reported that Apple’s emergency satellite help service will land in the United Kingdom as soon as December 13. The source said that British emergency personnel have been notified that calls made through the satellite emergency help function will be routed to local emergency service channels starting, December 13.
Apple’s Emergency SOS via Satellite service went live in the U.S. and Canada last month, and Apple said at the time that the feature would expand to France, Germany, Ireland and the U.K. this December.
Apple didn’t provide a specific date at the time, but December 13 seems reasonable now. It’s unclear whether this expansion will be limited to the U.K. or whether it will also expand to France, Germany and Ireland.
The iPhone 14 users running iOS 16.1 will have access to the emergency satellite help feature in supported countries and regions, and it will be available for free for two years. This feature allows iPhone users to make emergency calls outdoors using a satellite connection in the absence of a phone or WiFi connection.
