Apple CEO Tim Cook has revealed that the company will open its latest UK office at London’s iconic Battersea Power Station, two years later than originally planned.
Apple was first revealed to be planning this new location for its U.K. headquarters back in 2018. It was then reported that Apple employees would move into the structure by 2021.
Construction on the project has been delayed due to the coronavirus outbreak, and Apple is reportedly looking for an alternative.
Now Tim Cook has tweeted that Apple will move into the building in early 2023.
“We can’t wait to open our new office for our many team members in London at the iconic Battersea Power Station early next year. It’s a tribute to this incredible city and a reflection of our commitment to Apple’s future in the UK.”
At the time of the initial report, Apple was said to have eight offices in London. The Battersea Power Station project could consolidate all eight into one, housing approximately 1,400 employees.
Battersea Power Station’s iconic four towers made it a landmark on London’s South Bank, including seeing it in “Doctor Who” in the 1960s. But in the 1980s, the generators ceased to function properly and were abandoned for decades.
Battersea Power Station will reopen on October 14, 2022, as a retail, leisure and commercial operation with more than 100 stores, bars, restaurants and offices. Battersea Power Station Underground station opens in 2021 to serve the Northern Line area, meaning the new facility is a 15-minute drive from central London.
