According to the U.S. Trademark and Patent Office (USPTO) published list, Apple has been granted an iPhone patent, the side of the body installed a “Touch Bar”, used to display power and other information, and support the relevant interactive operation.
Note: This patent was first submitted in 2011, and was approved in 2014. After the expiration of the previous patent, Apple applied for the patent again in April 2023, and was approved again recently.
The patent is titled “Electronic Device with Sidewall Display” and describes an OLED or other flexible screen type on the side of an iPhone.
Compared to Apple’s previously filed patent for a wrap-around iPhone, this is a relatively easy to implement solution, with a Touch Bar on the side of the device that allows the user to interact with it by touching a sensitive part of the device or by looking at the screen.
Interactive elements include media controls, display information, caller information and some system controls, etc. The screen also supports gestures to further enhance the interactive experience.
