Apple will hold a press conference on Tuesday, September 13 to launch the new iPhone 15 series. Camera upgrades for the phones will be “the focus of the launch event” and “a key factor in attracting potential buyers,” according to a report from research firm TrendForce, which also revealed some previously rumored camera features.

According to the report, for the two new iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, the image sensor used will use Sony’s stacked sensor, which is a double-layer (Photodiode + Pixel) crystal pixel structure (2-Layer Transistor Pixel), expanding the dynamic range of imaging, as for the high-end Pro series, it will be equipped with a LiDAR optical radar scanner provided by Sony to further increase the night shooting capability, and the most flagship iPhone 15 Pro Max will be equipped with a periscope lens module (Periscope Module) ) to improve the performance of the camera’s optical zoom. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has said that this lens can achieve 5x or 6x optical zoom, while the current upper limit of the iPhone 14 Pro series is 3x.
TrendForce believes that the number and size of smartphone CIS pixels will not continue to increase, mainly because there is not much difference between the general user’s perception of 108MP and 200M pixels, and the increase in the number of pixels will increase the size of the sensor. Large, thus making the mobile phone larger and heavier, which does not meet consumers’ demand for portability.
Therefore, TrendForce said that the future upgrade direction will focus on the optimization of the CIS structure design (such as the double-layer transistor pixel architecture that will be adopted by the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 plus), and further enhance the photosensitive element by improving the structure and materials of the photosensitive element. The performance of the components, as well as the optimization and upgrade of the image processing algorithm, break through the hardware limitation through the AI algorithm, further improve the image clarity, dynamic range, reduce noise, and improves image quality.
It is noticed that the report also confirmed that all iPhone 15 models will be equipped with a USB-C interface and a Dynamic Island. The dynamic island is the design of the iPhone 14 Pro series that replaced bangs last year. The Pro series also has other features, including a lighter titanium frame, customizable Action buttons, A17 Bionic chip, Wi-Fi 6E support, and more.
