There has always been a saying among consumers: “Don’t buy a Mac to play games.” It’s not that Macs don’t perform well, but their performance in gaming is unsatisfactory. But today, according to Hardware Unboxed’s test data, Mac’s gaming performance is finally “up to snuff” on the latest M2 processor.
Hardware Unboxed used a 25W power-consuming AMD Riptide 7 6800U against a full-blooded version of the M2 (8 CPU cores and 10 GPU cores) for comparison.
In tests using Shadow of the Tomb Raider: Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the M2 managed to prove its performance in gaming by narrowly beating the Riptide 7 6800U at 1920*1200 resolution in medium, high, and highest image quality.
However, there are two things to note about the results of this test.
First, the Mac version of Tomb Raider: Shadow of the Tomb Raider is specifically optimized for M2 processors, which means it has an inherent advantage running on M2 Macs.
Secondly, the 25W power consumption limit causes the Riptide 7 6800U to not be able to perform at its full capacity, which affects the game’s running performance to some extent.
At the same time, for users who want to play games on Mac, whether developers are willing to develop macOS versions for games is a more important issue than the performance of the M-series processors for games.
