Apple’s M2 MacBook Air switches to custom USB Retimer chips

Apple has replaced the USB Retimer chip that controls the USB-C interface in the M2 MacBook Air with a custom model from Intel, meaning that the last remnants of Intel’s chip have disappeared from the Mac.

According to iFixit’s teardown report, they reportedly found a U09PY3 USB Retimer chip that “appears to be made by Apple” instead of the Intel JH8040R USB Retimer chip.

In May 2021, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that Apple planned to “replace the last remaining Intel parts with internal chips. At the time, the Apple M1 Mac was still using Intel USB Retimer components.

Apple officially announced the M1 chip in November 2020, when it said the two-year transition from Intel to its own chips for the Mac was officially underway. At this point, Apple has yet to deploy its own chips on the Mac Pro, which represents the highest computing power. If Apple launches the Mac Pro later this year with a high-spec M2 chip, the Mac transition will be successfully completed.
