Apple’s iPhone 15/Plus phones use cheaper batteries: only 600 charge cycles

Apple’s reason for adopting a cheaper battery for the series of phones may be that the relevant models of phones do not support fast charging, the phone’s battery loss in a single charge is less, Apple cut costs in this regard, and ultimately used a battery with only 600 cycles.

Apple is cutting costs on batteries because the company has established an extensive and reliable supply chain and retail network that allows it to quickly replace batteries for users, the media said.

It's because it uses cheaper battery cells, similar to third-party parts that average only 600± charge cycles.


Yes, it's a high-density battery. The original iPhone 12 Pro Max battery has a capacity of 3687 milliamp hours (mAh), while the third-party iPhone 12 Pro Max battery has a capacity of 4350 milliamp hours (mAh).


The battery capacity is the same or similar on the iPhone 13, 14, and 15, but the battery in the iPhone 13 is a high-density and high-quality cell.


When it comes to Li-ion batteries, most phones, especially flagship models, use batteries with 800 charge cycles. some of BBK Group's phones, such as the Find X, vivo X, realme GT 240W and OPPO, use more advanced self-healing battery cells with 1,600 charge cycles.


Batteries with 500-600 charge cycles are typically used in high-performance products such as mobile power supplies that support up to 300 watts of power transfer, vacuum cleaners, blenders or handheld/portable devices that support a minimum of 100 W. 18650 and 21700 cells are commonly used.


What about larger devices / electric vehicles? They use batteries with 800 charge cycles.


The best high performance battery exists in the Vespa Elettrica electric motorcycle made by LG Chem, which has 1000 charge cycles.


The problem is that the iPhone is not a high performance (100+ watts) product, so 600 charge cycles is unacceptable. In order to make significant upgrades without raising the price, Apple had to cut costs, which is another factor besides the drop in NAND prices that explains why Apple has been able to keep prices stable.


Interestingly, recent iPhone batteries use recycled cobalt as the cathode material, and repurposing recycled cobalt to battery grade actually costs the same or more, and is more expensive than buying a high-quality battery with 800+ charge cycles.


And most of Apple's revenue comes from services. So if certain parts of a product are easily replaceable, it will lead to more problems.


As long as it doesn't involve the display and other important parts that affect daily use, it's not a big problem.
