According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, the first batch of new AI features that Apple will launch in iOS 18 will run entirely on the device without relying on cloud servers.
Mark Gurman said in a Q&A session in his Power On newsletter today: “With the world eagerly awaiting Apple’s announcement of blockbuster AI technology on June 10, it now appears that the first batch of features will run entirely on the device. This means that the large language models that power these new features will not use cloud processing.”
Mark Gurman also noted that Apple may offer some cloud-based AI capabilities in the future, possibly powered by Google’s Gemini or other providers. Apple has reportedly been in discussions with companies including Google, OpenAI, and China’s Baidu about potential generative AI collaborations. While iOS 18 is not expected to include Apple’s own chatbot similar to ChatGPT, it’s unclear whether Gemini or other chatbots will be integrated directly into iOS 18.
It is noticed that some Apple supply chain analysts, such as Ming-Chi Kuo and Jeff Pu, said that since Apple is actively purchasing AI servers, it is possible to launch some of its own cloud-based generative AI functions in the future.
Rumor has it that iOS 18 will bring new generative AI features to iPhone’s Spotlight search tool, Siri, Safari, Shortcuts, Apple Music, Messages, Health, Numbers, Pages, Keynote and other applications. Mark Gurman has previously reported that generative AI will improve Siri’s ability to answer complex questions and allow messaging apps to automatically complete sentence input.
Apple will release iOS 18 and other software updates at WWDC, its annual developer conference from June 10 to 14.
