Despite having a completely different size than previous models, the Apple Watch Ultra is compatible with bands made for 42mm, 44mm and 45mm Apple Watch lugs. The new larger Apple Watch Ultra has a 49mm display that brings out what appears to be a larger form factor. However, it is still compatible with the Apple Watch band connector introduced in the initial model.
New Apple Watch Ultra bands like the Trail Loop, Alpine Loop and Ocean Band are made specifically to work with this rugged watch. These bands are designed specifically for the 49mm model but are still compatible with previous larger Apple Watch sizes.
This means that any large Apple Watch band, now or in the past, will work with any large Apple Watch currently shipping. As a result, the 42mm, 44mm and 45mm bands are universal in every generation of the Apple Watch.
However, the bands made for the Apple Watch Ultra are specially designed to match the colors and are difficult to match with other Apple Watch dials.
Owners of smaller Apple Watch sizes, however, are not associated with wider bands – in this case, those with 38mm, 40mm and 41mm cases – as the Apple Watch Ultra bands are only available in one size and cannot be matched with smaller Apple Watches.
Customers interested in the Apple Watch Ultra or the new bands can pre-order them now, and Apple will ship and make them available in stores starting Sept. 16.
