Apple supplier Foxconn broke ground today on its first factory in Telangana state in southern India. The state’s IT minister revealed on Monday that Foxconn will invest 500 million U.S. dollars in the area, which will directly create 25,000 jobs.
In addition, according to an official document submitted by Foxconn to the London Stock Exchange last week, the company spent 3.038 billion rupees to purchase a 1.2 million-square-meter development in Devanahalli, near Bangalore Airport.
Basavaraj S. Bommai, the chief minister of India’s Karnataka state, said in March that Apple would “soon” produce iPhones at a new factory that would create “about 100,000 jobs.”
Navkendar Singh of market intelligence firm International Data Corporation told AFP that Apple has had “great success” in the Indian market, selling 6.7 million iPhones in the country last year.
