Apple settles Canadian battery gate lawsuit

Apple will pay settlement funds to Canadian iPhone users to resolve class-action lawsuits related to the iPhone “Battery Gate” incident. Eligible iPhone users will receive 17.50~150 Canadian dollars from Apple ( The current compensation is about 93 ~ 798 RMB).

In February 2017, Apple “deliberately reduced the performance of older iPhones” in iOS 10.2.1 through certain means, but did not explain it to customers. The affected models include iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s, and iPhone 6s Plus. , iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus and iPhone SE.

At the time, Apple responded by stating that it would use a “power management system” to limit the performance of certain iPhone models when necessary to prevent the phone from unexpectedly shutting down when the battery ages. Later, Apple announced lower battery replacement prices and gave users the option to turn off the restriction.

Although Apple firmly refused to admit “wrongdoing” in all the accusations, it finally agreed to pay a settlement of US$500 million (currently about 3.58 billion yuan) to US users in March 2020. Now it is the turn of Canadian users.

CBC News reported that Apple will pay 11.1375 to 14.4275 million Canadian dollars (IT House note: currently about 59.251 to 76.754 million yuan) to achieve settlement, and each user can receive compensation ranging from 17.50 Canadian dollars to 150 Canadian dollars. , the exact amount depends on the number of people filing a claim.

It is worth mentioning that reaching a settlement does not mean that Apple has admitted wrongdoing. The company has denied all accusations against it. Additionally, the settlement applies to all regions of Canada except Quebec.

Class action lawyer Michael Pierless said in an interview, “The judge ultimately ruled that the proposed settlement agreement was ‘fair, reasonable, and the best decision for the class.'” “Apple made the right decision to take the initiative to stand up , taking responsibility for their products to some extent but not legally admitting that they did anything wrong. This is par for the course for class action lawsuits.”
