Apple removes AirTag battery indicator from “Find My Apps”

In iOS 15.6 and the latest iOS 16 beta, Apple appears to have intentionally removed the AirTag battery indicator bar from the Find My app. In previous versions of iOS, when the AirTag card was opened in Find My, a small battery icon similar to the iPhone’s battery status would appear below the AirTag’s name and location.

While there is no percentage attached, the icon provides a general indication of the AirTag battery level, and when it gets very low, the battery icon turns red and the user receives a notification to replace the battery.

In iOS 15.6, notifications will still be sent to users, but the usual battery level icon will not appear unless the battery is severely low. This appears to be intentional on Apple’s part, as the same indicator was removed from Find My in the latest macOS Monterey 12.5 and watchOS 8.7 updates.

Not only that, but in an updated support document on how to replace the AirTag battery, Apple also removed a specific mention of the battery icon from Find My.

The missing battery icon was spotted by the Dutch blog iCulture.nl, which speculates that Apple has removed it altogether because of the ongoing issue of how to properly display the indicator. Over the past year, in some cases, the battery would show up as empty, which was not, in fact, the case.

So it seems that unless Apple reverses this change, users won’t be able to check the battery status of their AirTags and will have to rely on the device’s low battery notification when it’s time to replace the battery.
