Since Apple launched Apple TV+, the streaming service has focused on original dramas and original movies in its official promotions. But Apple has recently quietly adjusted its Apple TV+ strategy, with the first appearance of a classic playback catalog.
Apple released five classic Sidney Poitier movies on Apple TV+ in September, in anticipation of the premiere of Poitier’s original series.
Apple launched Jennifer Lawrence’s previous films on Apple TV+ earlier this month to build momentum for the original film Causeway.
And as Techrader noted, Apple TV+ has quietly expanded its library of classic playback media. For example, some users searching for Spirited, Mythic Quest and Causeway on Apple TV+ will see a number of classic movies and TV shows on related topics.
Among these classics are such classics as Semi-Pro, Old School, and Van Wilder. Reports say there are at least 20 more licensed movies available on Apple TV+. But these classic throwback movies are currently limited to the U.S. and are not yet available elsewhere. But even though Apple TV+ now has a back catalog, Apple doesn’t seem to want that to be the platform’s primary strategy.
