According to DigiTimes, Apple is expected to update its MacBook Pro product line in the fourth quarter of this year (expected to be 2022 models 14-inch and 16-inch), and is expected to further push up the market share of Mac devices.
Recently, Wintel notebooks have been actively clearing inventory, with industry sources revealing that Wintel vendor inventories are expected to be cleared through at least the first half of 2023, with some Wintel brand owners having up to 40-50 weeks of inventory. Apple’s MacBook shipments are relatively stable, with Digitimes Research expecting MacBook shipments to reach 22.18 million units in 2022, down 1.4 percent year-over-year, but other brands such as HP, Dell and Lenovo are seeing double-digit declines. As a result, the MacBook market share will break into double digits for the first time, reaching 10.8 percent, a five-year high.
According to DigiTimes, suppliers in Apple’s Mac supply chain are preparing for the upcoming MacBook Pro shipments by slowing down the production of existing Macs.
Apple is expected to release new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros with built-in M2 Pro and M2 Max chips in the near future. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple plans to hold a Mac- and iPad-focused event next month, and Gurman says development of the updated devices is underway and could be launched as soon as this fall.
The leak says the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models are expected to retain the same design as the October 2021 release model, but with the addition of the M2 Pro and M2 Max chips for performance and energy efficiency. These chips are expected to remain based on the 5nm process and may have an increased number of GPU cores and RAM compared to their M1 counterparts.
In addition to the updated MacBook Pro, Apple may also plan to announce an updated Mac mini with the M2 chip, a new iPad Pro model and an Apple Silicon chip version of the Mac Pro at an event next month.
