Apple M2 Max with 38-core GPU beats RTX 4070 in OpenCL benchmark test

The Apple M2 Max is currently available with up to a 12-core CPU and 38-core GPU, which looks very powerful, but its GPU lost out to the RTX 4070 GPU on the laptop in the OpenCL benchmark test.

Given that the latest Mac mini can’t be configured with the M2 Max, the device that appears in Geekbench 5 is likely to be the new 14-inch or 16-inch MacBook Pro, but the OpenCL results show that its GPU is outmatched by the RTX 4070, which is powered by one of Samsung’s notebooks Among them, the notebook also uses a 14-core 20-thread Intel Core i9-13900HK processor.

In the OpenCL benchmark test, the Samsung notebook scored 102,130 points, while the M2 Max with a 38-core GPU only scored 75,139 points, a 35% performance difference, and the power limitations of the RTX 4070 in the Samsung notebook were not mentioned on Geekbench 5, which means that those slightly thicker gaming notebooks that with more powerful cooling systems are likely to gain a bigger lead.

It should be noted that Geekbench 5’s OpenCL scores are not an accurate representation of real-world performance.

However, the new MacBook Pro will certainly outlast the aforementioned Samsung notebooks in terms of battery life, with the company’s larger 16-inch MacBook Pro having the highest battery life of any portable Mac to date, at 22 hours on a single charge, according to Apple.
