Citing foreign tech media, the new 14/16-inch MacBook Pro models will come with M2 Max processors. The latest news says that the M2 Max will have 12 CPUs, two more than the number of CPU cores in the M1 Max.
The above information comes from the latest Power One newsletter from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who says that the M2 Max will have 12 CPU cores and support for up to 38 GPU cores, giving a nice performance boost.
Unfortunately, there is no information on the specifications of the M2 Pro, so those who don’t expect to buy the flagship model may have to opt for the base model. Gurman said that eight of the M2 Max’s 12 CPU cores will be focused on delivering performance, while the remaining four will be used to improve power efficiency.
In the press release, Gurman wrote
But let’s start with the more popular machines: the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro. I’ve been told that these laptops will be available in both M2 Pro and M2 Max configurations. The M2 Max will have 12 CPU cores – made up of eight performance cores and four efficiency cores – and 38 graphics cores. It will also continue to come with up to 64 GB of RAM. These options will be available for both screen sizes.
The maximum supported memory is expected to be limited to 64 GB, although this time, Apple may upgrade to the LPDDR5X standard, which will increase bandwidth and improve power efficiency. These improvements should translate into better battery life. Unfortunately, Gurman did not share the lithography technology for either the M2 Pro or M2 Max. There are rumors that both SoCs will be mass-produced on TSMC’s first-generation 3nm architecture, but it seems likely that Apple will stick to the Taiwanese giant’s 5nm process.
