In addition to today’s release of the second generation of AirPods Pro, Apple also introduced the third generation of AirPods, which comes with a Lightning charging case that lacks MagSafe wireless charging, meaning this version of the box can only be charged with a Lightning cable.

Pricing for the third generation AirPods is set at $169 in the U.S., and the third generation AirPods including the MagSafe case is priced at $179, so the value of choosing this new option seems very limited.

Apple did not announce any other updates to the third generation of AirPods today, and the second generation AirPods are still available for $129.

Apple today introduced the AirPods Pro with an H2 chip that offers better audio quality and up to 2x active noise cancellation, an improved pass-through mode for a more personalized spatial audio experience, a charging case with considerable improvements, support for Find My, and a new lanyard loop that connects to lanyards sold separately by third-party accessory manufacturers.
