Apple is testing punch screen prototype, expected to be used in the iPhone 16/17 Pro series

Generally speaking, Apple will determine the overall plan for each generation of iPhone model half a year before its release, that is, around March, but in fact the early development work starts much earlier, and even Apple The supply chain is often planned several years in advance, especially for display panel solutions.

This early design is for reference only, and there is always the possibility of changes before the new machine is finally put into mass production.

Whistleblower Majin Bu revealed that Apple is currently testing the iPhone 16 Pro prototype version, which includes a prototype with a single punch hole design instead of the “pill screen” + “smart island” used in the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 15 series. However, this design may also be preparing for the 2025 iPhone 17 Pro series.

Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consulting (DSCC), also previously pointed out that although testing will begin as early as 2022, don’t expect under-screen Face ID to appear on iPhones before 2025. According to his prediction:

Non-Pro series iPhones:

 2021: Bangs, LTPS

 2022: Bangs, LTPS

 2023: Pills, LTPS

 2024: Pills, LTPS

 2025: Pills, LTPOs

 2026: Pills, LTPO

2027: Under-screen Face ID + punch hole, LTPO

Pro series iPhones all use LTPO display technology:

 2021: bangs

 2022: Pills

 2023: Pills

 2024: Pills

 2025: Under-screen Face ID + punch hole

 2026: Under-screen Face ID + hole punch

 2027: Under-screen Face ID + under-screen camera

According to Ross Young, the biggest change next year will be that the display size of the Pro models will increase from 6.1 inches on the iPhone 15 Pro to 6.3 inches on the iPhone 16 Pro, while the Pro Max will increase from 6.7 inches to 6.9 inches.

He believes that Apple iPhones will usher in major changes from the iPhone 17 generation in 2025, such as the screen size of non-Pro models in that year will correspond to the Pro models, and the 2025 non-Pro models will introduce ProMotion 120Hz displays for the first time.
