According to DigiTimes, Apple’s iPhone 15 series will continue to use Qualcomm’s 5G modem (baseband chip) as the company continues to develop its own custom 5G chip.
Apple is currently developing an in-house 5G modem designed to replace Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 5G baseband chip in the next few years. Today’s report says TSMC will be Qualcomm’s primary supplier of 5G chips for the iPhone 15 series, using both 5nm and 4nm processes.
Apple’s iPhone 14 series uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon X65 modem, which helps improve 5G speeds and battery life. According to the leak, Apple’s iPhone 15 will use the more advanced Snapdragon X70 chip, which features artificial intelligence to increase average speeds, improve coverage, enhance signal quality, reduce latency, and boost energy efficiency by up to 60 percent.
Previous reports suggested that Apple would switch to an internal 5G modem as soon as 2023, but subsequent reports suggest that Apple’s 5G baseband chip development “failed” and that Apple will continue to use Qualcomm modems for the foreseeable future.
