Samsung hopes to develop the technology needed for satellite connectivity for the upcoming Galaxy S23 series models through a partnership with Iridium, EtNews reports.
According to the report, Iridium currently has 66 low-orbit communication satellites that can provide voice and data communication services to cell phone users. Apparently, Samsung aims to provide users with support for voice, text and even image transmission, just like Apple and Huawei.
Samsung has allegedly been developing this technology for two years and is currently facing the biggest challenge of how to make the phone’s antenna small enough and ensure sufficient power.
Apple previously brought satellite connectivity to users through the iPhone 14 series, whose supplier is Globalstar, and the two companies have reached a near-exclusive agreement.
Thanks to the maturity of the industry chain, a Google executive has previously confirmed that Android 14 will fully support satellite connectivity. The technology will help users make emergency calls in signal-blind areas, and will initially only support SMS, MMS, certain communication apps, and possibly even video.
The Samsung Galaxy S23 series is expected to be released in January or February 2023, and Samsung has already started developing firmware for the upcoming flagship. In addition, the 2023 models will be fully powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chips. Rumor has it that the Samsung Galaxy S23 series will benefit from exclusive SoC models that are highly optimized for the One UI experience.
